Honest Diaper Results Are In. . .

Since our oldest, The Princess, was born we've been a "Huggies Family".  Huggies diapers rarely leaked and their wipes were always the thickest.  Right before Hammie was born I tried cloth diapering with The Princess to see if it was something I wanted to do with Hammie.

I wish I could tell you I am a Eco-friendly, healthy eating mom and that's why I wanted to cloth diaper, but really it was to save money.  I chose the brand G diapers which were really cute and looked comfortable.  I tried them for one day with The Princess.  That's how long I lasted. ONE DAY.  I decided on that day, when I had a giant baby belly and I was hovering over the toilet scrubbing out a diaper liner (with a toddler running around unsupervised while I scrubbed the liner), that this was NOT for me.  On top of it, the snaps on the cloth diapers left marks on The Princess and by the time I calculated all different size sets I would have to buy throughout the years that it was not really a money saver for us.  (since I am not that mom to use the cloth diapers I buy for burp rags and pin them on- Bless you if you are that mom!)  Not to mention the laundry!  I can't keep up with our normal laundry!  So back to Huggies it was!

Yes, Huggies rarely leaked and their wipes were thick, but they also left nasty gel (supposedly safe) on my kids' skin when it got to wet.  If you look at the Huggies box their is no list of ingredients.  If you check the Huggies website they list their choice of ingredients and write "among others".   This does not sit well with me.

After having Hammie I found The Honest Company and found that even on our budget I could afford their bath products for my girls, but I still didn't think I could swing the diapers.  One day I started thinking about how careful we are about what we feed our girls and what we put on their sensitive skin.  Why would I be so careful about all of that and still diaper my baby with chemicals next to her sensitive skin?  I decided to order the trial set from Honest.  I was going to get 7 diapers and 10 wipes for the cost of shipping, but I had some trouble adding it for just the shipping so I emailed Honest and they sent them out for Free!  Awesome customer service!

When we put the first one on, it seemed just like putting a Huggies diaper on.  The wipes are even thicker than Huggies, if you can believe that!  They are a great size and feels like you are using a damp cloth.  We are now on our second Diaper Bundle and loving them!  I'm not the only one noticing a difference, hubby was changing a diaper the other day and said, "You have to check this out.  Feel how heavy this diaper is.  If it had been Huggies it would have leaked for sure!"  If your husband notices a difference then there IS a difference!

Now for the cost, one monthly bundle is $79.95 and it lasts us a little over a month.  You can also add on three extra items a month and get 25% off each item. (great if you want to stock up on wipes or healing balm).  For us, we grocery shop twice a month.  I have a budget of $220 for each grocery trip and this has always included diapers and whatever home supplies we need (not just food).  If we needed diapers during that trip that was that much less I had to spend on our other necessities.  With Honest, I put aside $40 from each grocery trip and there is my bundle money.  And I am not noticing any difference with the rest of my shopping!  Occasionally I could get Huggies on sale and save a few dollars, but overall I would rather spend those few dollars and have a list of ingredients on my diaper bag!  This means we basically spend $22.50 per person, per week. . . and we eat mostly organic. . . it can be done!

  1. So glad to hear your average budget! I've told others my budget for grocery and toiletries which is in the same neck of the woods as yours and the normal response is "HOW?!" In fact it has become almost a personal contest to see how to shave off more from our grocery budget. I find it ridiculously fun.
Glad you liked the diapers! I did notice that our local Food Lion carries a brand of chlorine free, chemical, fragrance free diapers... Earth's Choice. In the organic aisle. I don't have anyone in diapers around here to test them out, but I did notice the price seemed great. I think it was less than $15 for around 30 diapers and that was a grocery store price. I'm sure they could be bought for less online, if you cared to give them a try :)

  2. Amy- It IS fun, isn't it? I love seeing what I can do to our grocery bill! Last trip I actually had quite a bit remaining too! I used to coupon a lot, but I've been doing the best shopping between Trader Joes and Costco believe it or not! Thank you for the mention of the Earth's Choice diapers, if another Gomez happens along I will check those out! I'm going to keep Honest for Grace as she is pretty happy about all the pictures/designs covering her tush now, haha! Hopefully diapers will be done pretty soon in our house too. . . think of all that extra $$$! ;)
